Kayla de Freitas

My name is Kayla de Freitas - I am from a region called the Rupununi in Guyana, South America. I am fortunate to live in a place that still contains much of what the world has lost. I grew up on a cattle ranch. I learnt the indigenous Wapishana language from a young age and attended Primary school in indigenous communities. I was fortunate in my opportunities for education, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the University of British Columbia and an MSc from University College London. Currently, I am a Project Coordinator with the South Rupununi Conservation Society (SRCS). We are piloting an environmental education programme with the aim of integrating concepts of traditional knowledge and language into the formal education system in Guyana. Story-telling - and the media through which it gets told - has always been my passion.
